At the meeting in Mumbai, the captains made it clear that they dislike the Impact Player Rule. News agency PTI, citing a source, reported that almost all the captains agreed that this rule is disrupting the game’s balance. The rule has been under constant debate since its introduction in 2023. The captains believe it should be removed immediately in the game’s best interests.
Axar says all-rounders’ careers are being ruined.
Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has openly opposed the Impact Player Rule. They say that because of this rule, teams no longer feel the need for all-rounders. Previously, teams looked for players who could both bat and bowl. Now, management plays an extra batter or bowler as needed. This is completely diminishing the importance of true all-rounders.
Rohit and Hardik Criticise the Impact Player Rule
Axar Patel isn’t the only one who opposes the Impact Player Rule. Last year, Rohit Sharma also stated that he completely disagrees with the Impact Player concept. He believes it will lead to a shortage of all-rounders in Indian cricket. Hardik Pandya also clearly stated that this rule has made it very difficult to select a true all-rounder in the playing eleven.
The Impact Player Rule Will Not Change Until 2027
No matter how much captains and players are unhappy with the Impact Player Rule, it’s unlikely to change for now. In the meeting, the captains were clearly told that the BCCI has extended this rule until 2027. The next review of this rule will take place after the 2027 season. Until then, all teams must follow this rule.
Proposal to change the ball in IPL 2026 rejected
A new proposal to change the ball after 10 overs of the first innings was also put forward in this captain’s meeting. However, it did not receive support from others. Dew causes problems in the second innings so that the old rule will remain in effect.
In addition, the BCCI has introduced a new rule prohibiting teams from practising on the field on match days. If a team finishes its practice early, it will not allow the other team to use its nets.
