Donald Trump Raises Global Tariffs to 15% After Supreme Court Setback

US President Donald Trump has announced that he has increased global tariffs from 10% to 15%. Donald Trump shared this information in a post on TruthSocial.

Trump wrote, “As President of the United States, effective immediately, I am increasing the 10% global tariffs imposed on countries, many of which have been robbing America for decades… I am increasing it to 15%.” Trump also stated that over the next few months, his administration will issue new, legally approved tariffs that will continue the process of making America great again.

Just yesterday, the US Supreme Court overturned the Trump administration’s tariffs on several countries. After the decision, Trump stated that he was deeply disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision and that the judges’ decision was wrong.

A 6-3 majority delivered the decision.

The US Supreme Court delivered this decision by a 6-3 majority. In its ruling, the court stated that the Trump administration exceeded its legal authority in imposing import tariffs using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977. However, Trump criticised the Supreme Court’s decision and stated that he would sign an executive order imposing a 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. This allows the government to impose temporary import surcharges (up to 15%) for 150 days to address balance-of-payments deficits.

On February 7, India and the United States announced the creation of a framework for an interim agreement on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. A joint statement issued by India and the United States stated that this interim agreement would be a historic milestone in the partnership between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump has been very vocal about tariffs, and the Supreme Court’s decision is being considered a major setback for his agenda.

Trump first imposed reciprocal tariffs on most countries in April 2025, citing the US’s desire to reduce the trade deficit. However, the tariffs were challenged in the US Supreme Court.

Tariffs Reduced to 18%

Previously, the US had imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods. This included a 25% tariff on oil imports from Russia. Earlier this month, Donald Trump announced that he had reduced the tariffs on India from 25% to 18%. He wrote on Truth Social that India and the US had agreed on a trade deal.
