Names Of Metro Stations In Delhi Changed, CM Rekha Gupta Explained Why This Was Done?

Under the leadership of Delhi Chief Minister and State Names Authority (SNA) Chairperson Rekha Gupta, the names of some old and new Delhi Metro stations have been changed.

While some names have been retained as suggested in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) Detailed Project Report (DPR), the Authority’s Chairperson stated that metro stations are not just transit points, but also reflect the identity and cultural significance of the area, so the final decision was made after careful consideration of each name.

Announcing this decision, Delhi Chief Minister and Authority Chairperson Rekha Gupta stated that after reviewing the names of 21 stations proposed in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) Detailed Project Report (DPR), the Authority has decided to retain 12 names, modify 7, and change the names of 2 stations.

“Important Considerations Kept in Mind While Changing Names”

According to the Chief Minister, some important considerations were taken into account when renaming stations. These include the area’s local identity, its historical, social, and cultural significance, and recommendations from local representatives and citizens.

The Chief Minister stated that the names have been chosen to avoid confusion for travellers and ensure clear geographical identification of the area. Where necessary, combined names have been approved, combining the names of nearby major areas to make it easier for people to navigate.

These metro stations are included.

The metro stations retained are Majlis Park, Bhalswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Surghat, Jharodha Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali, and Maujpur-Babarpur. The revised station names include North Pitampura-Prashant Vihar (formerly Prashant Vihar), Jagatpur-Wazirabad (formerly Jagatpur), Nanak Piau-Derawal Nagar (formerly Derawal Nagar), Khanpur-Vayusainabad (formerly Khanpur), Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar (formerly Sonia Vihar), Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar (formerly Mayur Vihar Pocket-1), and Mangolpur Kalan-West Enclave (formerly West Enclave).

These names have been revised to reflect the local identity of the respective areas and provide clear directional signage. Also, completely renamed include Haiderpur Village (formerly North Pitampura) and Madhuban Chowk (Pitampura). This station’s name has been completely changed to reflect the region’s local identity.

In keeping with regional realities and public sentiments

CM Rekha Gupta said, “We have ensured that each station’s name is in keeping with regional realities and public sentiments.” She said that the State Naming Authority has decided on each proposal only after factual examination and detailed discussion. She also said that in the future, if a reasonable, public-interest-based proposal is received from any region, the Authority will consider it in accordance with the rules and standards.
