The month of April could bring signs of inflation for Delhi’s electricity consumers. An increase in electricity rates (tariffs) is expected from April. This is primarily due to the state government’s preparations to settle outstanding dues to power distribution companies (DISCOMs). The government has already made significant preparations for this.
According to sources, electricity tariffs in Delhi are likely to increase from April as the Delhi government prepares to settle outstanding dues of over ₹38,000 crore to three power DISCOMs. However, the Delhi government is planning to subsidise the increase in electricity rates to mitigate the impact on consumers. The government claims that the subsidy will not affect the people of Delhi. The government is taking this action with the interests of the people of Delhi in mind.
The Supreme Court’s order sparked a stir.
In August last year, the Supreme Court directed Delhi’s three private distribution companies (BRPL, BYPL, and TPDDL) to pay for regulatory assets, including carrying costs, amounting to ₹27,200 crore within seven years. Regulatory assets are costs that are expected to be recovered in the future. Electricity tariffs have risen sharply over the past decade, despite no tariff increases during the Aam Aadmi Party’s rule.
Attempts to Reduce Consumer Burden
The government is also considering options to provide relief to consumers amid potential tariff hikes. According to reports, the scope of subsidies may be expanded to ensure that the increase in electricity tariffs does not directly impact the general public. This is expected to provide some relief, especially to domestic consumers, although a final decision is still pending. Officials announced this on Sunday. However, they added that the government plans to subsidise the increase in electricity tariffs to mitigate the impact on consumers.
Why is a tariff hike necessary?
Experts believe this step may be necessary to improve the financial health of discoms and ensure an uninterrupted power supply. Long-standing backlogs and cost pressures have necessitated tariff revisions. It is being reported that while there are clear signs of a potential increase in electricity rates in Delhi, the government is also taking steps to provide relief to consumers while maintaining a balance. Only time will tell the extent to which these steps will provide relief to consumers.
