Bihar is steadily progressing towards air connectivity. After Darbhanga and Purnia, Supaul will soon be the hub of air connectivity. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced that a tender has been issued for the development and upgrade of Birpur Airport in Supaul district. A prefabricated steel structure terminal building, a pre-engineered Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, a pre-engineered fire station, and other airport-related buildings will be constructed to handle Code-2B aircraft.
The estimated cost of the project is ₹36.38 crore, and the completion timeline is 15 months. The objective of this project is to equip Birpur Airport with modern facilities and strengthen regional air connectivity. The construction of Birpur Airport will expand air services to Madhubani, Madhepura, Saharsa, Araria, and the neighbouring country of Nepal, as well as the surrounding areas.

Deputy Chief Minister Choudhary stated that the NDA government is continuously making efforts to strengthen air connectivity and infrastructure in the state. Recently, a tender worth ₹43.13 crore was issued for the construction of the runway at the under-construction airport in Muzaffarpur. The Airports Authority of India also issued a tender worth ₹38.64 crore for the development and upgrade of Valmiki Nagar Airport, and has now issued a tender worth ₹36.38 crore for the development and upgrade of Birpur Airport.

The Deputy Chief Minister stated that the government is also continuously making efforts to construct the Saharsa Airport. The construction process will begin soon. The state government is closely monitoring the ongoing airport construction to ensure quality and timely completion. Samrat Choudhary stated that the rapid airport construction, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the continuous efforts of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, will not only strengthen air connectivity in Bihar but also boost tourism, trade, and economic activities.
Nepal will also benefit.
The construction of the airport in Purnia is significantly benefiting the residents of the Kosi-Seemanchal region. Regular flights to Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Hyderabad are available, which are also enjoyed by people from neighbouring Nepal. The construction of the airport in Birpur, 120 km from Purnia, will benefit the people of Kosi. They previously had to travel 65 km to either Purnia or Darbhanga to fly. Birpur is only 60 km from Nepal. This airport will prove to be very beneficial from economic, social, and security perspectives.
