Ticketless Travel In Mumbai Locals Rises, Railways Collect ₹262 Crore Penalty

Mumbai local train: The Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) in Mumbai have cracked down on ticketless passengers, collecting a massive fine of ₹262 crore in a year. Of this, ₹7 crore was collected from ticketless passengers on AC local trains, with CR’s share being ₹3.51 crore and WR’s ₹3.76 crore.

CR’s Chief Spokesperson, Dr Swapnil Neela, stated that in the financial year 2025-26, Mumbai division teams detected 16.16 lakh cases of irregular travel on suburban, mail, and express trains, including AC local trains, and collected fines totalling ₹71.31 crore.

This represents a 2% increase in cases and a 4% increase in the amount collected compared to last year. In February alone, 1.65 lakh cases of irregular travel were detected, and fines totalling ₹8.58 crore were collected.

According to Western Railway Chief Spokesperson Vineet Abhishek, from April 2025 to February 2026, 3 million ticketless/irregular passengers (including those without booked luggage) were detected. These actions resulted in fines of over ₹191 crore.

Nearly 300,000 cases were detected in February.

Crores in fines were also collected on AC trains.

Central Railway also generated revenue from various sources during the period April 2025 to February 2026, including ₹3.51 crore from AC local trains for 1.1 lakh cases; ₹4.66 crore from first-class trains for 1.46 lakh cases; and ₹58.6 crore from second-class trains for 11.68 lakh cases.

Furthermore, a penalty of ₹2.98 crore has been collected from 50,809 cases of fare difference in mail and express trains and ₹1.56 crore from 1.4 lakh cases of unbooked luggage.
