Maharashtra Bike Taxi Ban: In a major move to address violations of transportation regulations in the state, the Maharashtra government has banned the bike taxi services of Ola, Uber, and Rapido with immediate effect. The government has revoked the temporary licenses of these three major companies. This action was taken primarily due to their disregard for environmental regulations and the illegal operation of petrol-powered vehicles.
This strict decision by the state government has completely halted bike taxi services in major cities like Mumbai and Pune, potentially impacting the livelihoods of thousands of drivers.
Violation of Rules and ‘Cheating’
The Maharashtra government had permitted these companies to operate only electric bike taxis (e-bike taxis). The aim was to promote eco-friendly transport in the state and provide employment to local youth. However, an investigation revealed that the companies were rampantly using petrol-powered bikes instead of electric ones. The government has termed this a violation of rules and a ‘cheating’ of the administration.
One-month deadline
MLA and senior leader Pratap Sarnaik clarified that companies had previously been given time to submit the required documents, but they did not comply. Now, the government has given the companies a one-month deadline. If the companies fail to meet the requirements within this period, their licenses will be permanently revoked.
Strict action: Bike owners and drivers will be prosecuted
The government has made it clear that strict action will no longer be limited to paperwork, but will also be taken on the ground:
Bike seizure: If any petrol-powered bike taxi is found operating, it will be confiscated immediately.
Legal case: In cases of rule violations, cases will be filed not only against the app company but also against the driver and the vehicle owner.
Future policy: The government has reiterated that only electric vehicles will be permitted in the future to maintain safety and environmental standards.
This decision by the state government is expected to curb illegal bike taxi services in Mumbai. The Transport Department has also advised passengers to avoid using these services for the time being.
