Ration Card News: A new era of digital payments is about to begin in India. The Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) could be launched for retail customers by the end of this year. Currently, it is primarily used for business-to-business (B2B) transactions. Still, according to Finance Ministry sources, preparations are in the final stages to make it available to the general public after a two-year pilot project.
CBDC has been developed as a digital currency issued by the Reserve Bank of India. The Reserve Bank of India is overseeing this project, which aims to promote secure, fast, and transparent digital transactions.
Use of digital currency in the free ration scheme begins in these states
CBDC has already been used for free ration distribution in two districts of Gujarat. Following this, it will be implemented in Puducherry this week. Following this, it is planned to be rolled out in Chandigarh and other Union Territories in a phased manner.
Under this system, digital currency will be issued by the RBI into the e-wallets of eligible beneficiaries. This will be in the form of a code or QR code, which can be presented at the ration shop to receive grains. Importantly, this digital amount will be valid only for purchasing rations and not for any other use.
Proposal May Be Raised at BRICS Summit
According to sources, the use of digital currency among member countries may be proposed at the BRICS Summit to be hosted by India in August-September. This initiative could be further developed in cooperation with the BRICS countries: Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa. India is also working on a pilot project with Singapore on digital payments.
Preparations to Make UPI Easier
In the digital payments space, banks such as the State Bank of India are offering UPI payments directly through their own apps. SBI’s YONO app is an example that eliminates the need for customers to use a third-party aggregator. According to the Department of Economic Affairs, other banks may also launch similar apps.
The government has clarified that it has no plans to impose any fees on UPI payments. Overall, the expansion of CBDC and UPI is expected to provide a new impetus to India’s digital economy.
